Literacy
Imagine delivering a lesson
on polygons to four classes
of Yr 2 children simultaneously. You may say.. no problem.

However, think again, what if
two of the schools are in
St.Helens Merseyside, one is
in Silverdale Cumbria and
the other in Karachi,
Pakistan.

Would it be possible?

Well yes, it would and the
reality of the idea has
already happened with year
2 children from Nutgrove
and St. Theresa’s Primary
schools in the St. Helens
EAZ.

They encountered a
polygon lesson based on
‘The Greedy Triangle’ by
Marilyn Burns. along with
Silverdale Primary School
and Karachi High School.

All of this could happen
because of an exciting
project for schools called
MOTIVATE a real-time
videoconferencing programme
for schools.

So as part of the Numeracy
calendar for schools in the
St. Helens EAZ both the Year
2 classes were transported
to Haydock CLC.

Here technical help was
available and communications
with MOTIVATE and the other
two schools could take place.

It was an amazing site when
the children from Silverdale
and Karachi appeared on the
big screen.

After a couple of technical
hic-ups the session went
quickly and it was great to
see all the children taking
part in the activities.
Part of the video-
conferencing project from
MOTIVATE requires that the
children complete a task of
their choice at school and
return for a second
conference.

In this session the children
will relate to the other
schools what they have
done and have the
opportunity to ask and
answer questions.

For the future, all St.Helens
schools by the beginning of
November will have
videoconferencing
equipment and, for many
children in St.Helens
videoconferencing will
become part of the normal
school day as teachers
begin to gain in confidence
using this exciting mode of
communication.
