Haydock Hornets wing
their way to Knowsley
Road.

Haydock Hornets is the
name of a group of Haydock
High students aged 12 to 15
who have taken part in
sports journalism activities.

The Hornets buzzed into life
as part of a joint venture
between the EAZ, St.Helens
RLFC and Haydock High
School. After applying for a
place on the programme,
26 lucky students were
selected to form the
Haydock Hornets team.

The first activity took place
when the team visited
Knowsley Road and met
Gordon Pennington. Upon
arrival, two of the Hornets
were invited to attend a live
press conference prior to that
week’s forthcoming match.

This was then followed by a
variety of activities including:

Seeing the Challenge Cup;
taking part in a fitness test;
having a tour of the team’s
training gym and listening
to a fascinating talk given by
Gordon on health and fitness
during which the Hornets
were educated on the diet
tips of the Saints’ stars.

Adam Harris, 14, a diehard
Saints fan, was impressed by
the whole experience:

“I was fascinated to learn
about how the players train
and how they keep healthy
through their diet.

I couldn’t believe how many
spoonfuls of sugar there are
in a can of pop – I’ll certainly
be drinking less Dr. Peppers
now!”
Last July some of the team
attended a Sports
Journalism workshop where
they learned how to write
a match report.

These skills were crucial
when they reported on the
League home game between
Saints and Bradford Bulls.

Not only did the Hornets
write the match report but
they also rubbed shoulders
with real journalists in the
press box.

You can read their report
on this page!

Haydock High students have
been given plenty of tips
about health and fitness
from the Saints team
regarding a balanced and
healthy diet.
