Police Partners in the
community “AWAY DAY”
Ann Lofthouse and Cathy
Parr are EAZ Attendance
Officers and have been
involved in a fantastic
attendance project with Karen
Jaundrill Scott, EAZ Arts
Consultant and artists from
the Artzone.
Ann and Cathy work in EAZ
schools to promote good
attendance and punctuality
through liaison with schools,
parents and children,
assemblies and competitions.
When St. Helens Police
wanted to fund a series of
playlets in a selection of
EAZ schools aimed at
highlighting truancy issues
they were very enthusiastic
about the project and excited
about being involved.
The dramas were based on
three school age characters,
Danny, Joanne and Lisa who
miss school for different
reasons.
The children were encouraged
to question each character to
find out more about their
problems, and then split into
groups to discuss them and
find ways to enable them to
attend school.
Along with the actors, Ann,
Cathy and Community Police
Officers took each group and
came up with solutions to
their problems.
Each group then gave
feedback on their outcomes.
Two children were asked to
give their views on the
plays.

James, from St Austin’s
reported, “It was fantastic!
I found it very interesting
because the three
characters had different
problems, some we hadn’t
heard about before.
We were made to think
about things more and we
learned where we would go
to find help.”
Joanna from Allanson
Street Primary decided that
“Adults care about us! The
play demonstrates that they
want us to be in school
and SAFE! The message
at the end of the day was
simple “don’t be off school
unless you are actually ill
– DON’T TRUANT!”
The plays were very
successful and will be
repeated.
